has already been remitted home by the Government to be invested in British War Loans.
One of the senior clerke in Sander Wieler & Co. was an Englishman of the name of J. H. Baokhouse who signed *per pro" Mr. Backhouse has recently returned to Hongkong from Shanghai where it is stated he made an arrangement with 8. W. & Co. to deal herein their goods under their old trade marks.
The London firm Bander Pheder & Co. who are registered as British do not seem to realise the situation and it would appear from their letters that they are under the impression the war makes no difference and their China associates will be able to carry on "business as usual".
It is uncertain whether Mr Backhouse will work for
8. T. & Co. or on his own account.
If the latter, it will probably be with (nominally) Chinese capital, which may really come from the old German firm. Siemsson & Co. had considerable stocks on hand which are now being cleared off. So far as Hongkong is concerned, the firm may be to the bad as it is understood they have considerable overdrafts at one or two of the local Banks.
Mr.
J. Manners, who signed "per procuration" for Biemssen & Co. at the outbreak of the war, is a British born subject having gone to Germany as a child. He came out to Hongkong and is reported to be very pro German.
He was granted a license to take over some Insurance Agencies formerly held by Siemssen's. Recently the Hongkong Government has issued him a full license as it was stated he was not working with his old firm, Mr Manners is represented in Canton by a Mr. Hector a British subject, who formerly had a desk in Siemssen & Co's office.
Siemesen & Co. in Canton have changed their name to "KAHL" and are now registered in the American Consulate as an American firm. Their staff is entirely composed of germane. The name "Kahl" is that of Mr. J. Arnhold Kahl who for many
years has represented the firm of Siemesen & Co. in New York.
